New Year's SMART Goals
Or rather... It is more accurate to say that I've come to resent the attitude and connotation that comes with making New Year's Resolutions. These days, they are treated like a joke where nobody - often even the people making them - don't expect them to stick.
It is my belief that more often than not, people tend to make unrealistic or simply unsustainable resolutions. They try to make massive changes overnight - which almost makes them destined to fail.
That being said, I do tend to set goals for myself at the start of each new year. Before you all come after me with your torches and pitchforks for such hypocrisy - hear me out! From October 29 - December 31st, I celebrate three different holidays, three major family birthdays (including my own) as well as my partner and I's anniversary. Three of these events (including my birthday) fall within the last week of the year. All things considered, it is just a convenient time for me to start fresh.
As a way of avoiding the cursed "resolutions" moniker, I also try to set "SMART" goals for myself - in other words, goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This is a method I learned during some CBT classes as a sort of approved method of goal making.
For those who don't think I'm nothing more than a lowly hypocrite - feel free to check out my progress on my 2024 Goals page!
